Nari Gandhi Biography

Nari Gandhi was a great Indian architect who lived in the 20th century. He lived during the period, 1934–1993. He is known for his highly innovative works in organic architecture, which promotes harmony between human habitation and the natural world. His ideologies and works were in sharp contrast to the mainstream architectural thinking, yet earned praises from all corners.

Nari Gandhi was born in 1934 in Surat to a Zoroastrian Parsi family. His ancestors are from Mumbai. He was born into a big family of 6 children. During his childhood he moved to Mumbai, where he schooled from St. Xavier's High School, Fort, Mumbai. As he had keen interest in the field of architecture, he studied the subject from Sir J. J. College of Architecture, Mumbai in the early 1950s. He then travelled to US and worked there for 5 years before he moved to Kent and studied pottery at the Kent State University for two years. After spending a little more time in US, he returned to India in the early 1960s.

He led a simple life, worked as an architect and also taught numerous students at various educational institutions. But he was a very sensitive person who gets angry easily and disputes with clients. He was so dedicative to his work that even small insensitivity could disturb and upset him. He exclusively worked in organic architecture, by incorporating his own ideas. He was unmarried and remained a bachelor till his death in 1993, aged 59. He was on his way to see a work site, when death took him away. He was a very religious man and lived as a Zoroastrian. He was deeply influenced by the philosophical ideas of Jiddu Krishnamurti.
