Naresh Kumar Shad Biography

Naresh Kumar Shad was an Urdu poet from Punjab who authored several ghazals, and other forms of poetry like Qat'aa and Rubai. He was also a journalist, and has also worked with government sector. He hailed from Hoshiarpur, Punjab. He came to limelight soon after the publishing of his first poetry collection, Dastak, and his works were often compared with his only close rival from Punjab, Sahir Ludhianvi – well known poet and lyricist. He was a disciple of Labhu Ram Josh Malsiyani, direct disciple of Nawab Mirza Daagh Dehalvi. Though he excelled in Qat'aa and Rubai, he gained popularity through the ghazals which he authored. He passed away in 1969.

 

Naresh Kumar Shad was born in Ahiyapur, Urmar Tanda, which now belongs to Hoshiarpur of Punjab. He belongs to a family of literals. His father Nauhariya Ram Dard Nakodari was a well-known Urdu journalist as well as poet. Young Naresh learnt Urdu and Persian from his father, and later followed the footsteps of his father in the field of words. Soon after studies he received a government job and was posted at Rawalpindi.

 

He also worked at Jalandhar as a government servant. As a writer he turned a celebrity at a very young age of 22, soon after publishing his first poetry collection, Dastak in 1950. He published the book with a small publisher in Jalandhar, where he was working as a government servant, which became a great hit in the Urdu local circle. Initially he used the penname Shad Nakodari. Nakodar was his hometown. Later he preferred to add ‘Shad’ to his real name and used for his publishing works. His ghazals became more popular comparing his other forms of work.
