Narayan Hari Apte Biography

Narayan Hari Apte, also known as Nanasaheb Apte was a noted novelist of Marathi literature and freedom fighter. He was a screenwriter of Marathi movies during 1930’s. He was also a writer of advice books and editor. A few of his advice books include - Sukhacha Mulmantra, Gruhasaukhya, Ayushyacha Paya and Kuryat Sada Mangalam. His novels fall under the category, social, advisory and historical and a few of the noted works include - Hrudayachi Shrimanti, Pach Te Pach, Na Patanari Goshta, Manawi Asha, Bhagyashri, Javanancha Jiwandharma, Punjabacha Ladhawayya Sikh, Ajinkyatara and Ekti.

 

Apte was born on July 11, 1889 in Maharashtra. In 1905 he left home to join freedom struggle movement. He joined Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's Abhinav Bharat Society as a part of freedom struggle. He set for a long journey during this time and gained knowledge of different languages during early 1900’s. He returned to Satata in 1911 and worked with Dattatraya Balavanta Parasanisa. In 1939 he joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and later participated in Quit India Movement too.

 

Apte’s first short story was published in Karamanuk magazine and his first novel Ajinkyatara was published in 1909. His literary career is associated with editing job too. He has worked as the co-editor of Kirloskar Khabar and founded a book publishing house, Ajinkyatara Pustkalay, in 1913 too. In 1915, he started a literary and political journal named "Alhad" and started a printing press, Shriniwas Mudranalay, in 1920. He founded the publishing house "Apte & Co" in 1924, from where he published two collections of his short stories. His last novel Javanancha Jiwandharma was published in 1962.

 

He was introduced to film industry by Baburao Painter in 1925 where Apte worked as a screenwriter. Very often he wrote the scripts of his own written novels. A few of his noted films include - Rana Hamir, Amrut-manthan, Rajput Ramani, Duniya na mane and Sawakari Pash.
