Narayan Biography

Narayan is a noted Malayalam writer, best known for his debut work - Kocharethi (1998), a novel which deals with the tribal communities of Kerala. Kocharethi has already published in 6 editions and has been translated to Hindi and other south Indian languages. He belongs to the Malayarayar tribe of Kadayathoor Hills, Idukki, and hence considered as Kerala's first tribal novelist. As a government service, he has worked with postal department. In 1999, he received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Kocharethi in the novel section. Manasum Dhehavum Kondu Njan Ninnea – (2010) was his last published novel. He also writes short stories and the latest published one is Narayante Kadhakal in the year 2013.

 

Apart from Kerala Sahitya Academy award, he has also won Economist Crossword Book Award, Abudabi Shakthi Award, Swami Ananda Theertha Award and Thoppil Ravi Foundation Award. His noted short story collections include - Nissahayante Nilavili, Kadhakal Narayan, Narayante Theranjedutha Kadhakal, Pela Marutha and Kadhakal Narayan. Apart from Kocharethi, Ooralikkudi, Chengarum Kuttalum, Manasum Dhehavum Kondu Njan Ninnea, Vandanam, Ee Vazhiyil Aalere Illa, Aaranu Tholkkunnavar and Thiraskrutharude Nalea are his published novels.

 

He started his career as a short story writer writing for periodicals. But he didn’t get recognition as a writer through those short stories. He published his debut novel, Kocharethi in the year 1999 and he shot to fame with this single book. Till now this author is known for this novel, whose main theme is tribal world. The novel also depicts the history of Malayarayar tribe of Idukki. He completed the work in 1988 though published it 10 year later. It also received Kerala sahitya Academy award.
