Namrata Rai Biography

Namrata Rai is an Indian dancer and instructor associated with Indian classical dance forms. She belongs to Dehradun. She currently serves as the artist and teacher of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. She is youngest daughter of Mr. S. K. Rai, a retired English lecturer at D.A.V College, Dehradun and her mother is a homemaker. She has three siblings – one brother and two sisters. She started her professional career in 1997 at a younger age and now one of the leading young accomplished dancers. Most recently she performed in the Jugalbandi: A tribute concert series to Pandit Ravi Shankar at Switzerland.

 

She was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand on November 27, 1984 to an English professor. She received initial training in classic dance forms from Madhukar Anand, of Lucknow Gharana and she adopted Gurukul system of studies. Following her graduation from Bhatkhande Music Institute, Lucknow, she joined Indira Kala Sangeet University, Khairagarh to complete her master’s in art. During her post-graduation studies, she got opportunity to learn under the renowned Kathak artist Birju Maharaj. She also participated in several dancing competitions across the state and won many prizes too.

 

She has also participated in several dancing competitions conducted by Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy. Namrta started her journey into the auspicious world of performances in the year 1997 and since then she has earned a lot of appreciation for her work. She has also performed in several prestigious dance festivals across the globe winning applauds from both, the art critics and the audiences. She most recently performed in Musica dei Popoli, Florence and Indischer Tempeltanz im werkof, DIG Lübeck, Germany.
