Nalini Malani Biography

Nalini Malani is an Indian artist and painter belonging to contemporary art. She believes in the concept of "painting beyond the frame" and incorporates art into video plays and shadow plays. She studied from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art Bombay and currently one of the leading personalities belonging to video art. She also paints in reverse. She is one of the early artists who made transition from traditional painting to new media work.

 

Nalini Malani was born in 1946 in Karachi just before partition. Her family moved to India as a refugee after the Partition of India and got settled in Kolkata. She was an infant then. In 1958 her family shifted to Mumbai, and Nalini grew up there. In the later years, she drew inspiration from partition and migration for many of her art works. Malani studied Fine Arts in Mumbai, and to pursue a career as an artist she enrolled for a diploma course at Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art. In those days she also owned an art studio in Mumbai, for performing artists. In the early 1970s she earned a scholarship from French government to study fine arts in Paris. Since then she has travelled in different countries.

 

Soon after completing her diploma course, she began her professional career with photography and film industry for a brief period, before she moved to Paris to complete her three-year course. In the late 1980s she began to explore techniques such as the reverse painting method she learnt from Bhupen Khakhar. She also remained as an art curator and conducted one of the first exhibitions of Indian women artists in Delhi in 1985. Since 1990s most of her works were displayed in galleries.
