Nalin Raval Biography

Nalin Raval is a popular writer associated with Gujarati literature. He is known as a poet and short story writer. He contributed 5 anthologies of Gujarati poems apart from a few short story works. He is a recipient of the prestigious Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in the year 2013, the highest literary award in Gujarati literature. Kavishwar Dalpatram Award in 2010 and Narsinh Mehta Award in 2013 are the other major awards received by him. Udagar (1962) - a collection of twenty one poems was his first published book on poems, followed by Avkash (1972), Laylin (1996) and Aahlaad (2008).

 

His full name is Nalin Chandrakant Raval. He was born on 17 March 1933 at Ahmedabad. His family is of Wadhwan origin. After schooling from his native town, he completed graduation and post-graduation in literature. He completed MA in the year 1959 and later started his career as a lecturer. He was in teaching profession till his retirement in 1993. He published his first poem while doing his graduation degree. His first poem was published in Kumar magazine in the year 1953.

 

Apart from his five anthologies of poems, he published a few short story works, criticism and one translation work - Sindhi Sahityana Itihasni Rooprekha (1977). Paschatya Kavita (1973) and Kavitanu Swarup (2001) are his criticism works. Swapnalok (1977) is his collection of short stories. He is one among those poets who wrote beautiful poems on the premature death of poets like Ravji and Manilal, thus paying thus honorable tributes. He elegized the death of Manilal through his poem, which can be literally translated as “Musical part of the life’s song is broken, Looking through the eyes of death, Who will now sing?
