N. Sreekantan Nair Biography

N. Sreekantan Nair was a famous politician, writer and freedom fighter from Ambalapuzha. A trade union leader he was associated with Revolutionary Socialist Party. He was one of the founders of Kerala Socialist Party which later merged into the Revolutionary Socialist Party. He has also served as a parliamentarian 5 times representing Kollam constituency. He got elected to Lok Sabha during  1952, 1962, 1967, 1971 and 1977 Lok Sabha elections. He translated the famous novel of Thakazhy – Coir to English.  Ithuthanne Marxism, Aikya Keralam, Vanchikkapetta Venad, Kazhinjakala Chithrangal, Ente Amma and Sahithya Salakangal are his major works.

He was born on 15 July 1915 in Ambalappuzha of Alappuzha district, Kerala state. He was single son to his parents, Neelakanta Pillai and Janaki Amma. He completed his graduation in English with honours from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Nair developed his own ideas, and later became one of the founders of Youth League. When Travancore State Congress was organized in 1938, he became one of its founding members. In 1947 along with Mathai Maanjooran he founded Kerala Socialist Party. Following the split in 1950, his party merged with Revolutionary Socialist Party. He has written several books on his revolutionary ideas.

He became extreme popular as an MP, and has served the term 4 times representing Kollam constituency since 1962. He was a prominent socialist leader of Kollam in the 1950s - 1970s. He was a member of first Lok Sabha in 1952. But he was defeated in the second parliament elections held in the year 1957. After that he got elected to parliament for the next four terms. He spearheaded the trade union movement in Kerala. He passed away in 1983.
