N. Janardhana Reddy Biography

N. Janardhana Reddy was an Indian politician from the former state of Andhra Pradesh, who served as the chief minister of the state during 17 December 1990 – 9 October 1992. He was the 12th CM pf the state of undivided Andhra Pradesh. He was also an influential parliamentarian who has been elected to the 12th, 13th and 14th Lok Sabha, for three terms continuously. Reddy, along with his wife escaped an assassination attempt near Nellore by naxalite groups in 2007. He passed away on 9 May 2014 in Hyderabad aged 79. He was affiliated to Indian National Congress political party.

 

N. Janardhana Reddy’s full name is Nedurumalli Janardhana Reddy. He was born on 20 February 1935 in Vakadu, Madras Presidency in British India. He was married to Nedurumalli Rajyalakshmi and had 4 children. He got into active politics in the early 1970s, when he got elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1972. He was a Rajya Sabha member till 1978, followed by MLC in the late 1970s, 1980s and later. He joined state cabinet in 1978 and served as minister of Revenue, Industries, Power and Agriculture. He served as P.C.C. President during 1988–1989.

 

After that he got elected to legislative assembly and was given portfolios - Agriculture, Forests and Higher Education. He served in this position during 1989-1990 till he was elected as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 17 December 1990. He served in this position for about two years. Later he moved to national level politics, and got elected to Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms since 1998. After his term in Lok Sabha ended, he was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2009 and re-elected the following year too.
