Muzaffar Ahmed Biography

Muzaffar Ahmed was a noted politician from Bengal, who was active in the pre-independent era. He was also a journalist and communist activist and revolutionist. He was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India. Ahmed was popularly known as "Kakababu". He was one among those who got imprisoned for Kanpur Bolshevik Conspiracy Case by the British. Though he was a Muslim, he preferred to stay in Kolkata, instead of moving to East Pakistan. When Communist Party of India was banned by the Government of India soon after independence, he got arrested. He has been arrested and jailed many times by government of India later too.

 

Muzaffar Ahmed was born on 5 August 1889 at Musapur village in Sandwip Island in Chittagong District of Bengal Province. His birthplace now belongs to Bangladesh. Mansur Ali and Chuna Bibi were his parents. He got involved with social movements since his late teens. He became the secretary of "Bangio musalman sahitya Samiti" in 1918. He closely worked with Kazi Nazrul Islam since then and also started two magazines along with him. He contributed articles using the pseudonym "Dvaipayana".

 

Ahmed was one of the founding members of Communist Party of India in the 1920s during British rule. For his revolutionary activities, he has been arrested and jailed by British multiple times. He was one among the members who organized the Labour Swaraj Party in Bengal in 1925. Soon after partition of India in 1947, he moved to Kolkata from Chittagong. When Communist Party of India was banned by the Government of India, he got arrested. He was jailed multiple times by Congress government in the 1950s and 1960s. He passed away on 18 December 1973 at the age of 84.
