Mundur Krishnankutty Biography

Mundur Krishnankutty was a popular writer belonging to Malayalam literature. He hailed from Mundur of Palakkad district. He was a teacher by profession. A highly acclaimed writer of Malayalam, he has received many major awards of Malayalam including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Odakkuzhal Award, and the Cherukad Award. "Moonnamathoral" is regarded as his masterpiece. This particular short story was listed by noted short story writer T. Padmanabhan as one of the world's ten best stories. Krishnankutty is also an actor who has appeared in a few Malayalam films and serials. He passed away on 4 June 2005, following liver problems. He was 69.

 

His real name is Anupurath Krishnankutty. He later used ‘Mundur’ tag aside his name. Mundur of Palakkad district is his native place where he was born on 17 July 1935. Manakulangara Govinda Pisharody and Anupurath Madhava Pisharasyar are his parents. He completed schooling from Parali High School. Later he completed his graduation, PG and B.Ed and started his professional career as a school teacher in Palakkad. Since then he has worked in many government schools. Though he is best known as a short story writer, he has also published a few short novels such as Mathuvinte Krishnathanuppu, Manassu Enna Bharam and Ekaki.

 

He published his first short story "Kannalichekkan" in 1956. Since then he has spent about 5 decades in Malayalam literature, and published more than 200 short stories and three novels. He portrayed the life of rural Palakkad in most of his works. In 1996, he received Cherukad Award for his collection of short stories - Nilappisukkulla Oru Rathriyil. In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for the same work. In 2003 he received Odakkuzhal Award for Enne Veruthe Vittalum. Oru Adhyapakante Athmagathangal – is his memoir.
