Mullanezhi Biography

Mullanezhi was a noted Malayalam poet, playwright, lyricist and actor from Thrissur most known for his beautiful poems related to village life. Through his works, he created a curious and fascinating blend of traditions as well. He has won Kerala Sahitya Academy award twice - for the drama Samathalam in 1995 and for the poetry collection Kavitha in 2010. He also received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyricist in 1981 for the film Njavalpazham. During the last phase of his life, he was associated with Malayalam films as a noted lyricist. He has also acted in offbeat award winning movies like Neelathamara, Uppu, Kazhakam and Piravi. Neelathamara was one of his roles in which he plays the character role of an old man sitting under the banyan tree near the temple and who dies in the end.

 

Mullanezhi was born in Mullanezhi Mana, Ollur, Thrissur district in May 16, 1948. He used to write poems from his childhood. Yet it was great poet of Malayalam, Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon who discovered Mullanezhi’s writing talents and later guided him a lot. Vyloppilly was also instrumental in prompting him join for Vidwan course. After the course, Mullanezhi joined Ramavarmapuram Government High School as a teacher.

 

As a writer, his most beautiful collection of poems includes - Mohapakshi, Raapattu, Naaranathupranthan and Penkoda. He was an active theatre artist also and led in front, Agragami Theatres. His collection of playwrights is published as anthology work, 'Samathalam’. He has also served as a director board member of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi from 1980 to 1983. As a film lyrcist, his first song itself was a huge romantic hit. "Karukaruthoru Pennanu" for Njavalpazhangal is still remembered for its wonderful lyrics. As a lyricist Indian Rupee was his last movie. Ee puzhayum sandhyakaum of Indian Rupee was the top song of the year 2011.
