Mitra Phukan Biography

Mitra Phukan is an Indian author and novelist from Assam who writes in English, best known for her masterpiece work, The Collector’s Wife. This book is set up against Assam’s insurgencies and also the first English novel to be published by a writer from North-East India. The book is widely regarded as one of the finest Indian English books by any female writer and one of the best in modern style writing. The plot revolves around the life of a girl who is married to a district collector, and the work gives a great insight into the life of a small town in Assam. Mitra is also a translator and columnist. She has also authored a few children books.

 

Mitra Phukan hails from Assam. She is settled in Guwahati now. Started writing in the 1980s, she published Mamoni's Adventures (1986), Chumki Posts a Letter (1989) and The Biratpur Adventure (1994) for kids. It was followed by Terrorist Camp Adventure in 2003 and R G Baruah The Architect of Modern Assam published in 2004 followed by The Collector's Wife, the work which gave the writer critics’ acclamation and a lot of fans. The book is one of the finest works in English in the recent times.  

 

Her other published works include - A Monsoon of Music (2011), Guwahati Gaze (2013), Blossoms in the Graveyard (2016) and A Full Night's Thievery (2016). A Full Night's Thievery and Blossoms in the Graveyard were published back-to-back two weeks apart from each other. ‘A Full Night’s thievery’ is a collection of thirteen of her short stories, which have been written over the years. Blossoms in the Graveyard is a translation of Jyanpeeth Awardee Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya’s book, “Kobor Aru Phool”.
