Miani D. Shira Biography

Miani D. Shira is an Indian politician from the north-east state of Meghalaya. She belongs to a political family and is the daughter of former Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma. Her husband, Daryll William Cheran Momin is also a politician and is the grandson of Williamson A. Sangma, Meghalaya’s first CM. Miani belongs to Indian National Congress and she won Ampati assembly seat in Meghalaya in bypoll in 2018. She is one of the youngest Congress politicians from Meghalaya.

Miani D Shira hails from Shillong, Meghalaya. She was born into a political family as the daughter of former Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma. She also got married to a political family; quite interestingly to the family of a former chief minister. She is married to Daryll William Cheran Momin, grandson of Williamson A. Sangma, Meghalaya’s first CM who spearheaded the movement demanding separate statehood for the hilly area of North-east India. She completed her schooling from Shillong, and later moved to Delhi where she did her graduation from Sri Ram College of Commerce. She graduated in the year 2012. To pave way for the political debut of his daughter Miani D Shira, Mukul Sangma vacated his seat Ampati, and Miani D. Shira won bypoll elections in 2018.

In bypoll elections 2018, Shira won the Ampati assembly seat in Meghalaya with a margin of just 3,191 votes. She defeated CG Momin of the ruling National People's Party (NPP). Sangma had contested and won from two constituencies and vacated the Ampati seat, which led to bypoll. During election campaign a video of Miani D Shira, went viral, wherein she allegedly calls the residents of Selsella constituency as less intelligent comparing the people of Ampati. It also invited controversies and former NGO leader Adinson Ch Momin said that her comments show her immaturity as a person.
