Mathew T. Thomas Biography

Mathew T. Thomas is a prominent politician belonging to leftist group of Kerala. He currently serves as y the minister for water resources in Government of Kerala. He is State President and Legislature Party Leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) party of Kerala. In 2016 state assembly elections he got elected from Thiruvalla constituency defeating Joseph M. Puthusseri of KC (M) by over 8000 votes. A third-time MLA, he has been elected to state assembly in 2006 and 2011. He was a cabinet minister of V. S. Achutanandan’s cabinet, serving as Minister of Transport for Kerala.

 He hails from Tiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. He was born into a Christian family in the year 1961. His father Rev. T. Thomas, a priest of the Mar Thoma Church. He holds a graduation and LLB degree. He entered politics during the imposed Emergency period 1975-1977. He joined the student’s wing of Janata Party, Kerala Vidyathi Janata, thus beginning his political journey. He became KVJ Unit Secretary while doing graduation at Marthoma College, Thiruvalla. He slowed moved to many distinct and elite positions of the party and became state president in 1985, a position he served for three years.

He contested state assembly elections for the first time in 1987 and got elected to state assembly in 2006, 2011 and 2016 elections too. He became as a cabinet minister twice. While he was chosen as the minister of transport in 2006, some of his reforms brought KSRTC out of its financial crisis. He implemented proper steps in reducing extra costs and also added revenue to the existing system by the restructuring of bus routes. He revived the KSRTC bus body building units, thus saving huge amount of money. He also enabled funds for KSRTC, and achieved the credit of being the only minister who reduced the bus fares of KSRTC.
