Manoj Mitra Biography 
Manoj Mitra is a noted theatre personality from Bengal. He has also directed a few films and also known as an actor and playwright. He has acted in movies as well as television. He has penned more than 100 plays till now. Mesh O Rakhash, Noisho Bhoj, Chhayar Prashad, Galpo Hekim Saheb, Debi Swarpamasta, Sajano Bagaan, Parabas, Alokanandar Putra Kanya, Narak Guljar, Aswathama, Chakbhanga Madhu, Munni O Saat Chowkidar, Rajdarshan, Mrityur Chokhe Jal, Rangerhaat, Ja Nei Bharatey etc are among his popular plays. Along with theatre and film director Partha Pratim Chowdhury he started the group Sundaram and serves as its president now. He is also the president of the Paschimbanga Natya Akademi, Govt. of West Bengal.
He was born 22 December 1938 in Dhulihar village of Satkhira, Khulna of present-day Bangladesh. His father Ashok kumar had a transferable job. For the same reason, his school studies was done at home itself. During the Durga Pujas, mythological plays and jatras were common in those days and were conducted in his courtyard. He got attracted to them, though was not allowed to participate, by his senior members of home. His formal studies started only after India partition. He studied at Basirhaata and then joined the Scottish Church College. He graduated in philosophy with honours in the year 1958. His first play was Mrityur Chokhe Jal which won state level competition.
During his college days, he used to write stories for magazines and was active in theatre as well. He completed MA in Philosophy from the University of Calcutta and also did research work. After studies, he joined as Philosophy teacher at Ranigunj College, Kolkata. Later he taught at Rabindra Bharati University where he was the HOD and got retired as Sisirkumar Bhaduri professor.
