Madhur Kapila Biography

Madhur Kapila is a female writer belonging to Hindi literature. She is best known as a novelist and fiction writer, apart from the roles of a noted journalist as well as art critic and a reviewer of Hindi literature. Bhatke Raahi, Satwan Swar and Saamne ka Aasman are her noted novels, while Beechon Beech, Tab Shayad and Ek Muqadama Aur are her best and most popular short story collections. She received Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi award in 2011 for her outstanding contribution to literature. Many of her works have been translated to Punjabi, Telugu and English languages.

 

Madhur Kapila was born in Jalandhar, Punjab. When she was born in 1942, India was still under British rule. She is now settled at Chandigarh. She started her journalist career in 1977 as a freelance journalist and art critic, and has worked with many dailies, journals and magazines. She also published her short stories and literary columns in many of such magazines. In fact her first novel Satwan Swar was serialized in the weekly, Dainik Tribune. She published her first story in Veer Pratap daily in 1960.

 

She served as a member of the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi for more than 30 years. Many of her literary works have been used by students for their research works. She published three novels apart from three short story collections. Her name has been included in the list of 111 Hindi female writers of the 21st century by ‘The Sunday Indian’ in 2011. She was married to noted journalist Ramesh Kapila, a special correspondent of ‘The Indian Express’ who worked with the daily since 1975. He passed away in 2010 following a heart attack. The couple had a son Ashish and two daughters Kriti and Shruti.
