Madan Mitra Biography

Madan Mitra is an Indian politician from the state of West Bengal. He is currently associated with All India Trinamool Congress. He started his political journey with Indian National Congress and later switched his party affiliation to Trinamool Congress. He served as the member of Bengal legislative assembly during 2011–2016, and served as Minister In Charge Sports & Transport, West Bengal during 20 May 2011 – 18 November 2015. He held many positions of Indian Youth Congress, during his early days with Indian National Congress.

 

Madan Mitra was born into a rich family in Bhowanipore, Kolkata. He was born on 3 December 1954. He completed his under-graduate degree in history from Calcutta University in 1976. He joined politics during his college days in 1973. Mitra started his career with Indian National Congress and became south Kolkata president of the Indian Youth Congress. Initially associated with Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi faction, he first switched to the Somen Mitra faction in 1976 and then to the Mamata Banerjee faction.

 

In the 1990s he was associated with labour unions and launched a taxi drivers' union and also the union of the SSKM Hospital. When Mamata Banerjee founded the Trinamool Congress in 1998, he initially hesitated to join the new party. However he joined it and also served as a minister and MLA under Mamata Banerjee. In 2000, he was appointed general secretary of the party and in 2004, the president of the Trinamool Youth Congress.

 

He got elected to the Legislative Assembly for the first time from the Kamarhati constituency in 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. He became the sports minister and transport minister in the First Mamata Banerjee ministry. He resigned his cabinet power when he was accused of Saradha Group financial scandal. In 2016 state assembly elections he lost to Manash Mukherjee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 4,198 votes.
