Macchindra Kambli Biography

Macchindra Kambli was an accomplished theater personality associated with Marathi theatre. He was an actor, director, and producer, known for his instant timing in comedy and Malvani dialect. He has been one of the stage personalities who brought Malvani dialect of Maharashtra to stage plays and popularize it as well.  He established Bhadrakali Productions known for its ethnic Malvani comedies. He died during his middle ages in 2007. He died of heart attack aged 55. He also served as the president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad.

 

He was born in the year 1952 in Rewandi village, Sindhudurg. He lost his father at a very young age and he was raised by his mother. Passion drew kambli to theatre. He earned 15 rupees doing odd back-stage jobs. He hung curtains and ironed costumes as well. His first role was offered by Mohan Tondwalker in 1973. It was a bit role and thus began his acting career.

 

Later he established Bhadrakali Productions which staged numerous plays, which gave emphasis on Malvani comedies. His witty dialogues and comic scenes earned him instant recognition. ‘Vastraharan’ – a path-breaking play established Macchindra Kambli as an established theater personality. There was no turning back after that. He went on to produce numerous plays under his banner. Many of his plays are inspired from stories of Hindu mythology, including Vastraharan inspired on an episode of epic Mahabharata.

 

Pandgo Ilo re, Ghas re rama, Yeva Konkan Aplach Asa, Maza Pati Chhatrapati and Vai Varsha Panchavan also need mention. He had a brief stint in politics in association with Indian national Congress though it didn’t become successful. He unsuccessfully contested for Lok Sabha elections in 1998.
