M. M. Hassan Biography

M. M. Hassan is an Indian politician from Kerala associated with Indian National Congress. One of the senior leaders of state politics, he has been elected to state assembly multiple times. He was elected to state assembly for the first time in the year 1980 from Kazhakootam constituency, followed by 1982, 1987, 1991 and 2001. He was defeated by newly formed LDF in the year 1996 when Antony Raju received a surprise win over this senior congress candidate. After being elected to state assembly in the year 2001 for the fourth time, he served as Minister for Information and Parliamentary Affairs during the period, 2001-2004 in A. K. Antony’s cabinet.

Hassan hails from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. He was born in the year 1947. He was introduced to politics during his college days, where he became a member of KSU. He holds an LLB degree. Served many decorative positions of Kerala Students Union, he reached the position till State President of the students’ union. He later served as senate member and Chairman of the Kerala University Union. He entered state politics in the early 1980s. He successfully contested state assembly elections for the first time in the year 1980 from the Kazhakootam constituency, followed by 1982. He has also successfully contested from Thiruvananthapuram West and Kayamkulam constituencies.

In 2016 he unsuccessfully contested from Chadayamangalam constituency of Kollam district, where he was defeated by LDF candidate Mullakkara Rathnakaran by a huge majority of 21928. All the 11 constituencies of Kollam district were fully swept by LDF. Hassan currently serves as the Vice president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). During his tenure as Minister for Information and Parliamentary Affairs (2001-2004) he held the additional portfolio of Minister for Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs also.
