M. I. Shanavas Biography

M. I. Shanavas was an Indian politician from Kerala. A parliamentarian from 16th Lok Sabha, he was the working president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. A veteran politician affiliated to Indian National Congress, he died on 21 November 2018 in Chennai, following complications from a liver transplant. Congress lawmaker from Wayanad, he has been ailing for some time. He leaves his wife Jubairiyat Begum and two children. Both his kids are married. His son-in-law, A. P. M. Mohammed Hanish is Kochi Metro Managing Director.

 

M. I. Shanavas was born in Kottayam on 22 September 1951. He graduated from Farook College, Kozhikode with MA English Literature and later did LLB from law College Ernakulam. He entered politics through the Kerala Students Union. He was the chairman of Calicut University student’s union in 1972. From a student’s leader to Member of Parliament, he remained a close associate of Congress party within Kerala state and also worked in the Youth Congress and Seva Dal. However he along with two more Congress leaders rebelled with K. Karunakaran and formed a new group. But it later joined hands with Indian National Congress.

 

He was a member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee since 1983 and was serving as the working president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee when he passed away in 2018. He is a 2-time parliamentarian, who got elected for the first time in 2009 general elections from Wayanad (soon after the constituency was formed) with a major win of highest margin, and he was serving as a sitting MP when he passed away in 2018. He tasted his first win after he faced 5 defeats.
