M. Chidananda Murthy Biography

M. Chidananda Murthy is a noted writer, historian and scholar from Karnataka. He is also a well reputed teacher who taught at different educational institutions. He has deep knowledge in Karnataka history as well as Kannada language. He has published many of his research works, and his campaign to conserve the monuments of ancient city, Hampi is well known. He published his works since early 1960s. He is a recipient of Rajyothsava award, Sahitya Academy Award, Pampa Award in 2002, Alva's Nudisiri Award in 2006 and many more.

M. Chidananda Murthy was born on May 10, 1931 in Hirekogalur village, Channagiri taluk of Davanagere District, Karnataka. He completed graduation from Mysore University in 1953 and Master’s in Kannada Literature in 1957. He wrote the famous essay Pampa kavi mattu maulya prasara while doing his PG at Mysore University. He got influenced by many writers and historians while doing his studies, and Kuvempu, PuTeeNa, S. Srikanta Sastri and P. T. Narasimhachar were the prominent names. Later he completed PhD degree from Bangalore University in 1964. He submitted the thesis, A cultural study of Kannada inscriptions.

He served as a professor for a long term. He served as the head of the department of Kannada Bangalore University, and has also taught in Kannada Shakti Kendra. He continued with his research works and published many books on Kannada culture and language. Karnataka-Nepala Prasaranga, Basavanna, Cidananda samagra samputa, Gramina Bapko Prakasana, Madhyakalina Kannada sahitya mattu asprrsyate Prasaranga, Samsodhane, Virasaiva dharma, Bharatiya samskrti Prakasana, Sweetness and light Sahithigala Kalavidara Balaga, Lingayata adhyayangalu Vagdevi Pustakagalu etc are among his noted contributions. Apart from doing research works, he has also guided many students.
