Leeladhar Jagudi Biography

Leeladhar Jagudi is an author, teacher, journalist and poet who writes in Hindi language. For his contributions towards Indian literature, he was honoured with Padma Shri by government of India in 2004. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his 1997 anthology of poems, Anubhav Ke Aakash Mein Chand. Raghuvir Sahay Samman, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Shatadal Award, Namit Puraskar and Aakashvani Award are a few more honours received by him. Jagudi was employed in Indian military, and he started his second innings as a teacher and journalist after his retirement from Indian army.

 

Leeladhar Jagudi was born on 1 June 1944 in Dhangan gaon, Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand. He holds a master’s degree in Hindi language and literature. After studies he joined Indian army in the Garhwal Rifles, and had a long career in military service till his retirement. After that he worked as a teacher in various schools and colleges, and then joined as Deputy Director at Information and Public Relations Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. He forayed into journalism only after that. He joined as Chief Editor of Uttar Pradesh, a monthly magazine.

 

As a poet, he wrote many poems and published them in dailies and magazines, and later published them as anthologies too. One such anthology earned him Sahitya Akademi Award. Shankha Mukhi Shikharon Par (1964) was his first published collection of poems, followed by Natak Jari Hai, Yatra Mein, Raat Ab Bhi Maujud Hai, Ghabaraye Hue Shabda, Bachi Hui Prithvi Par and Anubhav Ke Aakash Mein Chand. His published books include compilation works too. He also published many columns on different subjects.
