Laxmikant Parsekar Biography

Laxmikant Parsekar is an Indian politician from the state of Goa, who served as the 12th Chief Minister of Goa during the period, 8 November 2014 – 14 March 2017. He was preceded and succeeded by well-known politician, Manohar Parrikar who currently serves as CM. When Manohar Parrikar joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, he was appointed as CM. During the Goa Assembly Election in 2017, he lost from his seat of Mandrem and had to resign his position as CM. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party, and has represented Mandrem constituency earlier. He has also served as Goa Minister of Health earlier. He has been associated with regional politics since 1980s and has spent more than 3 decades till now.

Laxmikant Parsekar hails from Pernem, Goa. Harmal is his ancestral village. He was born on 4 July 1956 during Portuguese rule in Goa. He completed his Master’s degree and B.Ed course in the early 1980s and plunged into active politics in the second half of 1980s. After studies he started his profession as a school teacher and has served as the principal of Harmal Panchakroshi Secondary School, Harmal. He has been an RSS worker during his younger days.

He got into active politics in 1988 when he unsuccessfully contested Mandrem constituency as a BJP candidate. He was instrumental in building the BJP's support base along with political veterans, within the Goa state. He served as a General Secretary of the party in Goa during 1994-1999. He contested state assembly elections for the second time in 1999 and lost it again. But in 2002, he defeated the sitting MLA Ramakant Khalap by a small margin of 750 votes, thus joining the legislative assembly for the first time. He also served as the President of the BJP Goa Unit from 2000 to 2003 and then from 2010 to 2012.
