Laxma Goud Biography

Laxma Goud is a well-known painter, printmaker and draughtsman from Hyderabad, present-day Telangana. His early drawings depicted eroticism in a rural context. Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2016, for his contributions towards the field of art. He has successfully conducted many art exhibitions in India and abroad, which include many solo exhibitions too. Noted known painter and printmaker from Hyderabad, Nandini Goud is his daughter. He has conducted exhibitions in many foreign countries since 1970s.

 

His full name is Kalal Laxma Goud. He was born on 21 August 1940 to Venka Goud and Anthamma. He has 6 siblings including two sisters. He spent his childhood days in his rural village, and in those days he was a keen observer. He was attracted towards rural tradition and craft. Later he studied drawing and painting at the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad. He later received training in mural painting from renowned artist and Padma Vibhushan awardee K. G. Subramanyan. While studying mural painting at Baroda, he got drawn towards printmaking, and made some amazing contributions towards the field.

 

After studies he returned to his native village, and got attracted to the unselfconscious attitudes toward sexuality in the rural themes. He chose similar themes for his early works, where depicted eroticism in a rural context. Later he experimented with urban themes as well. He explored sexual themes more intensely in the 1970s. He also worked as a teacher at Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Art, Fine Art & Communication, affiliated to University of Hyderabad. His art gallery, titled Manifestations I, II and III was organised by Delhi Art Gallery in 2003, 2004 and 2006 respectively.
