Lalita Lajmi Biography 
Lalita Lajmi is an Indian painter from Kolkata, Wes Bengal. She is the sister of famous filmmaker and actor of yesterdays, Guru Dutt. Thus Geeta Dutt was her sister-in-law. In 1994 she was invited to Guru Dutt Film Festival London in memory of the great filmmaker. She carries different roles in art and entertainment field. She gave a guest appearance in Aamir Khan's 2007 Bollywood film, Taare Zameen Par. Lalita has also worked as a costume designer for one play directed by Amol Palekar. She has also worked as a graphics artist in Hindi movie Aghaat. She has exhibited her painting works in Germany and USA. Her daughter, Kalpana Lajmi is an award winning film director associated with Bollywood.
Lajmi was born in Kolkata in the year 1932. His parents were originally settled in Karwar but relocated to Bangalore. Her father was a poet and her mother, a polylingual writer. She spent his early childhood in Bhowanipore, near to Kolkata. She was not a painter from her childhood days. She started painting in the early sixties, in her early 30s. She participated in a group exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. That’s how she got into the world of art of colours. She exhibited her first solo painting collection in 1961. After that she got closely attached to the art for more than 5 decades. She has conducted her painting exhibition in many cities of India and abroad.
She also showcased her work in Graphic workshop in 1985. Her work has been displayed in various famous art galleries across the country. She has also done group exhibitions, apart from solo ones. Her earlier works drew inspirations from her personal life and observations, while her later work reflected the hidden tension between men and women. She was the recipient of the Government of India Junior Fellowship from 1979 to 1983.
