Ku. Alagirisami Biography

Ku. Alagirisami was a prominent writer belonging to Tamil literature in the 20^th century. His works include – poetry, novels, plays, short story collections, children's fiction and a few translation works. He also owned a few essay colections. He was noted for his short stories. In 1970 he was given Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil posthumously. He earned the award for his short story collection Anbalippu. He was also a journalist by profession and worked as editor and sub-editor. He passed away on 5 July 1970 aged only 46.

Azhagirisamy, also known as G. Alagirisami was born on 23 September 1923 in Idaicheval, Koilpatti of Tamil Nadu in British India. Noted Tamil folklorist and author Ki. Rajanarayanan was his childhood friend. Vallikannan, Pudumaipithan and T. M. Chidambara Ragunathan were among his other friends and contemporary writers. After completing his SSLC, he began his professional career as a teacher for a brief period. He then worked as a clerk in the registrar office before he began his journalist career. During his active career in journalism, he also wrote columns and poetry for different publications in Tamil language.

In 1943, he published his first short story in Ananda Bodhini. The short story was titled Urakkam Kolluma. His first short story collection - Ku. Alagirisamy kathaigal was published in 1952. The following year he moved to Malaysia to work in Tamil Nesan. He got married in 1955. Throughout his career, he has worked as an editor/sub-editor in Sakthi, Navasakthi etc till 1965. After that he worked as a freelancer writer till his death in 1970. Doctor Anuradha, Theerada Vilayattu, Puthu veedu puthu ulagam and Vaazhkai padhai are his published novels.
