Khushwant Singh Biography

Khushwant Singh is an Indian novelist and a journalist who is noted for his weekly column With Malice Towards One and All in different Indian newspapers. He belongs to Indo Anglican origin. He is famous for his humor and love of poetry. He served as editor in various news magazines and two major broadsheet newspapers.

 

He was born on 2nd February 1915 in Hadali in Khushab district of Punjab in British India in a Sikh family. His father is Sir Sobha Singh. He studied at Modern School at New Delhi an in Government College at Lahore. Then he continued his education at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and King’s College at London. He has one son Rahul Singh and one daughter. The actress Amrita Singh is his niece.

 

He studied law and started his career as lawyer in High Court in Lahore in 1947. He wrote about his experiences in his novel in 1956, Train to Pakistan. He edited the magazine Yojana, The Illustrated Weekly of India and two other major Indian newspapers, The National Herald and Hindustan Times.

 

He served as the member of Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986. He was given the Padma Bhushan award in 1974 for his service. In protest against the siege of Golden Temple by Indian Army, he returned back the award. He was awarded Padman Vibhushan by Government of India in 2007.

 

He had written Urdu poetry and writes in Punjabi language also. His outright honesty is the striking aspect of his works. He is accused of favoring the Congress party. He has received Punjab Rattan Award by the Government of Punjab in 2006, Sahitya Academy fellowship award by Sahitya Academy of India in 2010.

 

Some of his works include The Mark of Vishnu and Other Stories, The History of Sikhs, I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale, The Sikhs Today, The Fall of the Kingdom of the Punjab, Women and Men in My Life, The Company of Women, The End of India, Burial at the Sea, Paradise and Other Stories, We Indians, The Sunset Club, Black Jasmine, Delhi: A Novel, Death at My Doorstep, etc. and many more short stories.

 

He was an atheist.
