Khaled Choudhury Biography

Khaled Choudhury is a theatre personality and artist of Bengal, who worked for both Bengali and Hindi. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan on 2012 and has also received Fellowship of Sangeet Natak Academy– Academy Ratna in the year 2008. Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1986, Kalidas Samman from Govt of Madhya Pradesh in 2005, Paschim Banga Rajya Academy Award in 2008, Chamanlal Memorial Award, New Delhi in 2000 and Shiromani Puroskar in 1997 are a few awards received by him. He has also been honoured with honorary doctorates by Rabindra Bharati University in 2000 and Vidyasagar University, two years later.

 

Khaled Choudhury was born on 20 December 1919 in Assam. His father was Chandranath Dutta Choudhury and his mother was Hem Nalini. Chirakumar and Chiraranjan Dutta Choudhury were his first two names. He changed his name to Khaled Choudhury in 1943. He had a strained relationship with his father. He moved to Kolkata two years later and joined Indian People's Theatre Association. He contributed the team with drawing, painting and music. He became a part of a shadow theatre in 1947. Later he joined Bohurupee in 1953. He has been involved with Bohurupee for the theatre plays – Dharmaghat, Pagla Ghora, Angshidaar, Rakta Karabi, Angshidaar, Jajaati, Gandaar and Swargiya Prahasan. He was associated with directors, Sombhu Mitra, Amar Gangopadhyay and Tripti Mitra.

 

Later he associated with many theatres including - Calcutta Theatre Productions, Group Theatre Productions, Shishu Natya Sangha, Mukhosh Theatre Centre, Calcutta Puppet Theatre , Nandikar Productions, Anaamika Productions, Rupakar, Khelaghar, Bangla Naatmancha Pratistha Samiti, Rangakarmee, Shaoli Mitra, Aarabdha Natya Vidyalaya and many more. His association with Anaamika Productions has resulted in many plays like Ghar aur bahar, Sacchhayi kya hai, Pagla Ghora, Saanp uttara, Vallabhpur ki roopkatha and Mere Bacche. He was most active in the decades of 60’s and 70’s. A few of his publications include - Theatere Shilpo Bhabona, Lokoshongiter Prasangikota o Onyano Prabondho and Smritir Sarani.
