Kewal Dheer Biography

Kewal Dheer is a noted writer of Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu languages who has won numerous awards till now. Apart from writing for several publications, his contributions include novels, travelogues, memorials and translation works. He has also produced a few television serials. His award winning story collection works include "Dharti-Ro-Pari" in Hindi, "Bikhri Hui Zindgi" and "Apna Daman Apni Aag" in Urdu, "Lahu Da Rang" in Punjabi and "Bonds of Love" in English. Most recently in 2013, he was honoured with Ambassador for Peace Award by SAARC Organisation for Sufism, Islamabad and Sat Paul Mittal Award in Appreciation to Service of Society through Literature by Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust. He is the founder of Adeeb International and Sahir Cultural Academy.

 

Dheer was born on October 5, 1938 in Gaggo village in Montgomery District, now in Pakistan. He is the eldest son of social reformer Hans Raj. Dheer attended school in Phagwara. As a writer, his first works were published in magazines. Dheer received a medical degree from Patna and started his professional career as Medical Officer after completing work with the Health Department of the Government of Punjab. His first book got published in the year 1957. It was a collection of short stories, "Dharti-Ro-Pari, which won Bihar Pragatisheel Sahitya Parishad State Award on Hindi short story collection.

 

As a writer he has published 10 volumes of short-stories and 5 novels, apart from travelogues on Pakistan, US, UK, Canada and a few European countries. Vachan, Sheeshe-Ki-Diwar, and Gumrah are his screenplay works for Indian television. He has also served as the editor of  Swatantrata Weekly (1958–1960), The Signature (2000), Qamar Monthly (1967), Kitab Numa (July 2004) and Adeeb (2010).
