Kedarnath Agarwal Biography

Kedarnath Agarwal was a famous Hindi language poet and litterateur. For his contributions to Hindi literature he was awarded with the Soviet Land Nehru Prize in 1973. He has also received Sahitya Academy Award in the year 1986. In 1995, he was conferred with honorary doctorate in literature by Bundelkhand University. He has also received numerous honours including Hindi Sansthan Uttar Pradesh Puraskar (1981), Tulsi Puraskar (1986), Maithili Sharan Gupt Puraskar (1990–91) and the Sahitya Vachaspati Manad Upaadhi (1990). His most famous poems include - "Ken kinare, patthar baitha gum sum", “Mar hathauda”, “yug ki ganga”, "Phool nahin rang bolte hein" and "Bansi na bajao majhi".

 

Kedarnath was born on April 1, 1911 in Kamasin in Banda district in Bundelkhand, UP. His parents are Hanuman Prasad Gupta and Ghasiti Devi. After taking a Bachelor of Arts degree, he completed LLB course and became an advocate in Banda in 1938. Yet writing was his real passion. He was also a member of the Pragatisheel Lekhak Sangh, a body inspired by the leftist Progressive Writers' Movement. He has also involved with many other activities related to literature and education. He served as president of the Arya Kanya Intermediate College for a long period.

 

Noted books of Kedernath include - Jo Shilayein Todte Hain, Kahein Kedar Khari Khari, Apoorva, Yug Ki Ganga, Bole Bol Amol, Neend Ke Badal, He Meri Tum, Pushpadeep, Aatma Gandh, Lok Aur Alok, Gulmehndi, Pankh aur Patwar, Vah Chidiya Jo, Jamun Jal Tumzsadasdsadsad, Phool nahin Rang Bolte Hain, Khuli Aankhein Khuli Daine, Aag Ka Aayeena, Mar Pyar ki Thapein, Anhari Haryali and Bambay ka Raktasnan. There is a foundation dedicated to commemorating Agarwal's contributions to literature - "Kedar Shod Peeth" which gives away Kedar Samman for a Hindi writer every year for his contributions to literature.
