Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Biography

Kasu Brahmananda Reddy was an Indian politician from undivided Andhra Pradesh belonging to Indian National Congress, who served as 3rd Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He was preceded by Neelam Sanjiva Reddy when presidential rule was brought in. He served as the CM of Andhra Pradesh during a long term from 21 February 1964 to 30 September 1971, for more than 7 years. He passed away on 20 May 1994 in Hyderabad, aged 84. The famous Chiran Palace in Jubilee Hills of Hyderabad was named as Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park in his honour. He is known for his efforts to keep Andhra Pradesh united, even while Telangana movement.

Kasu Brahmananda Reddy was born on 28 July 1909 in Chirumamilla of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. His early education was done at Guntur, and later he studied in present-day Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He completed his law studies and practised law for some time before he joined active politics. During his term in politics, he remained an influential leader who expelled Indira Gandhi from Indian National Congress. He is also credited to creating the Industrial infrastructure in Hyderabad city and its outskirts.

He took power as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh on 21 February 1964, and during his tenure of long 7 years, he is best known for building the infra-structure of the state. He was instrumental in establishing many industrial firms like BHEL, HMT, IDPL, Hindustan Cables etc in the city, and also several defence establishments like MIDHANI, Bharath Dynamics etc. Apart from serving CM of the state, he also held many portfolios during different terms in the state legislature. He also served as Home Minister of India (1974–1977) and Governor of Maharashtra (1988 - 1990).
