Kapil Sibal Biography

Kapil Sibal is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. Currently he serves the position of Ministry of Communications & IT and the Ministry of Law & Justice in the cabinet of Manmohan Singh. He has hold many ministry positions in the Congress lead UPA government over the years, Ministry of Science & Technology, and the Ministry of Human Resource Development being the first two. He is the son of H. L. Sibal, a renowned advocate who was named "Living Legend of the Law" by the International Bar Association.

Sibil was born in a poor economic condition and was homeless following India partition in 1947. He was born on 8 August 1948 in Jalandhar, Punjab. His father was forced to migrate to India during partition. Kapil Sibal moved to Delhi in 1964. He completed his schooling from St John's High School in Chandigarh. He took LLB from St. Stephen's college, University of Delhi and later completed post-graduation in History as well. He joined the bar association in 1970. In 1973, he qualified for Indian Administrative Services, but he preferred to set up his own law practice. He completed LLM from Harvard Law School in 1977 and became a senior lawyer in 1983. In 1989, he was appointed the Additional Solicitor General of India.

Sibal was first nominated in July 1998, as a Member of Parliament from Bihar. He served as Additional Solicitor General of India (1989-1990) and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association on three occasions. In 2004, he was elected to parliament from the Chandni Chowk constituency. He became Union Minister for Science, Technology and Earth Sciences in Manmohan Singh’s ministry and has till now served the government in different minister positions.
