Kalyan Singh Biography

Kalyan Singh was born on 5th January 1932 in Lodhi Rajput family of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. His parents are Tejpal Singh and Sita. He was married to Ramvati and has one son and one daughter. He studied at D.S. Degree College, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He is a prominent Indian politician and he served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh 3 times.

In 1967, he was elected as the member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time from Atrauli. In 1977 he served as a Minister of State, Health in Uttar Pradesh. In 1980, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became the State General Secretary. He retained the constituency at every election except in 1980. He served as leader of the opposition in the U.P. Assembly in the late 1980’s. Later in 1984, he became the State President of BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

In 1991, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His administrative abilities were appreciated. Later, he had to resign after the Babri Masjid demolition. He again became the Chief Minister in 1997 with the support of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BSP withdrew its support within a month but the Government of Kalyan Singh survived. On October 1997, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) withdrew the support to Kalyan Singh government. After that Naresh Agarwal of Indian National Congress supported him and they formed a new party called Lokantrik Congress.  In 1998, his government withdrew all the cases against those who were involved in Ram Janmabhoomi Movement.

In 2004, he was elected as a Member of Parliament to Lok Sabha and also served as the National Vice President for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).  He was appointed as the Vice-President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His son Raj Vir Singh also served as the Member of Legislative Assembly. Kalyan Singh was thrown away from the BJP and formed the new party called Jan Kranti Party on his birthday. He handover all the responsibilities to his son Raj Vir Singh and he retired from the politics.
