K. Varalakshmi Biography

K. Varalakshmi is a well-known writer associated with Telugu literature. She hails from Jaggampeta of East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. As a writer she is best known for her short stories, and she chooses rural themes addressing women most. Many of her writings are regarded as social reforming. She predominantly authored short stories, and also penned poetry and other works. Her poetry collection, Aame was released in 2002. Some of her noted short story collections include - Jeevaragam, Matti-Bangaram, Athadu-Nenu, Kshatagatra and Pittagullu. She is a recipient of Sri Peddibhotla Subbaramayya award, Suseela Narayana Reddy award, Tana Katha award, R.S.Krishna Murthy award, Dharmanidhi award from Telugu University and many more.

The reputed story writer was born on born 24 October 1948 in Jaggampeta of East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. Palla Venkata Ramana and Bangaramma are her parents, she is their eldest daughter. She was born into a middle class family and she completed her early studies from her native village. She pursued M.A. from Andhra University after she became financially well settled. She married Kala Ram Mohan Rao in 1964 and the couple was blessed with three children. Her daughters, Dr. K. Geeta and Sri Lalitha are noted Telugu writers. While Geeta is interested in poetry, Lalitha chose mother’s path. Their only brother K. Ravindra Phaniraj is a Tourism Project consultant in Hyderabad.

She has received some awards for both poetry and short story collections.  Yet she earned recognition as a story teller. Vimalasanthi award, Sahrudaya Sahiti award, Hasan Fatima award, Ranjani award, Ajo-Vibho award, Auto Katha award, Tana Katha award, Rangavalli award, Pulikanti award and R. S. Krishna Murthy award are some of the awards received for story collections.
