K. S. Ramaswamy Gounder Biography

K. S. Ramaswamy Gounder was an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu, who has served as a parliamentarian and was associated with national level politics. An MP twice during 1957 and 1977 elections, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Gobichettipalayam constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate. He served as union deputy minister for Home, Education and Social Welfare in Indira Gandhi's ministry, and has been a recipient of multiple honours including Chevalier and Sir. He headed the Indian Olympic Contingent to the 1972 Munich Olympics. He left behind a legacy, and an area in Chennai has been named as Chevalier KSR Nagar.

 

K. S. Ramaswamy Gounder was born in the year 1922. He was born in Kugalur village of Gobichettipalayam of Madras Presidency in British India. He is the son of the freedom fighter K.K Subbanna Gounder. Following his father’s footsteps, he too chose social service as his main aim. A prominent Congress politician in the 1950s of Tamil Nadu, he was influential in national level politics too, and has served as a union minister during 1967–1972. Apart from serving two terms in Lok Sabha, he was also a member of Rajya Sabha during 1962–1974.

 

A multifaceted personality, he was also an industrialist, advocate and agriculturist. He was also active in social work, and associated with many organizations of different aims. He played an important role in setting up of Gobi Arts and Science College in Gobichettipalayam. While serving as a parliamentarian, he has been a member of several national level committees. He passed away on 4 December 2004, aged 82. He spent his final years in his hometown, Gobichettipalayam.
