K. Radhakrishnan (politician) Biography

K. Radhakrishnan is a politician and former MLA and minister from Kerala, belonging to Communist Party of India (Marxist). He got elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time from Chelakkara Assembly Constituency, and was the minister of Youth Affairs & SC-ST Affairs in E. K. Nayanar ministry during 1996 – 2001. He also served as the 18^th speaker of Kerala legislative assembly from 2006 to 2011, in the ministry led by V. Achuthanandan. He had a humble beginning in politics, and now he has turned an influential leader.

He was born on 24 May 1964 in Idukki. He belongs to a very humble background, born to M.C Kochunni and Chinamma. His father worked in plantations of Idukki as a worker, who originally hails from Chelakkara in Thrissur district. K. Radhakrishnan later moved to his hometown at Thrissur, where he completed his schooling. While doing his graduation at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, he entered into political activities. He was an active member in SFI, student’s wing of communist party and later moved on to prominent positions from district level to state level.

Despite having a humble beginning in politics, without any political background, he rose to many positions within the state politics, and also served as an MLA, state minister as well as the speaker of Kerala legislative assembly. He was elected to the Thrissur District Council in 1991 from the Vallathol Nagar division. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1996, 2001 and 2006. He served as Minister for the Welfare of Backward and Scheduled Communities and Youth Affairs from 1996 to 2001. He was Opposition Chief Whip from 2001 to 2006, and state assembly speaker from 2006 to 2011. He was the 18th Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
