K. P. Noorudeen Biography

K. P. Noorudeen was a senior politician and former cabinet minister from Kerala, associated with Indian National Congress. Known to be a good member of KLA, he represented Peravur state constituency during the period – 1977-1996. Thus a five-time MLA, he also served as Forest-Sports Minister during the term 1982-1987. He was popular as a social worker too. He had sustained a serious head injury after he fell down after feeling giddiness. Though he was rushed to nearby Koyili hospital in Kannur and later to MIMS, he succumbed to his head injuries on 29 May 2016 aged 76. He was a member of Congress Working Committee.

K.P. Noorudeen was born on 30 July 1939 in Kannur district. His father Vengadan Muhammad Haji was one of the earliest socialist workers. He was born as the fourth son to Haji and his wife K. P. Mariyam.  He started his political journey after his school life. He joined Indian Youth Congress while at college as Youth Secretary of Kuttoor Peruvamba unit. In 1972 he became the treasurer of KPCC and very soon became the Managing Director of the party newspaper, Veekshanam Printing and Publishing Company.

In the first state assembly elections following the Emergency period, he got elected to state assembly for the first time representing Peravur. Since then he served as the MLA of the same constituency for almost two decades till 1996. Thus he served as a 5-term MLA from Peravur. He handled the portfolios of Forest, Sports and Animal Husbandry in K. Karunakaran's Cabinet. He published one autobiography work – Aa Reethiyil Munnott Pokum. He was married to K. M. Asma, and had four children. He died on Sunday 29 May 2016 following a cerebral hemorrhage.
