K. M. George Biography

K. M. George was a writer, educator, scholar and literary critic from Kerala. He was associated with Malayalam literature and worked as a professor in many colleges. Comparative Indian Literature, Modern Indian Literature and Masterpieces of Indian Literature are his celebrated non-fiction works. He is best known as a pioneer of Comparative Indian Studies and Literatures. For his outstanding contributions to the field of literature, government of India honoured him with the third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan in 2001. He passed away one year later. He was also a recipient of Padma Sri in 1988.

Karimpumannil Mathai George is the full name of K. M. George. He was born on 20 April 1914 in Edayaranmula, Kerala. As a literary critic and scholar, he gave some immense contributions to literary world, and he authored books in Malayalam and English languages. He spent his whole life for the study of literature of different Indian languages. An authority on comparative literature, he excelled as a critic, essayist, literary historian, hilologist, linguist etc. He was a multifaceted personality. Dr. George has served as Assistant secretary in Kendra Sahitya Academy in the 1950s, and editor of Indian literature.

Recipient of Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan, given by government of India, he has been referred for several honorary titles too. He received Kerala state’s highest literary honour, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram in 1996. He has published more than 50 works, edited 10 anthologies and translated a few works too. Vedapusthakamahathmyam in 1935 was his first published book, followed by Saadhu Kochunju (1947), Ekaanka Mandalam (1947), Radio natakankal (1947), Munthirichaaru (1950), Sardar Patel (1950), Vicharakowthukam (1952), Prabandhachandrika (1953), America – ChilaVasthuthakal (1953) etc.
