Jitish Kallat Biography 
Jitish Kallat is an Indian contemporary artist based in Mumbai. His wife Reena Saini Kallat is a contemporary visual artist. Apart from painting and photography, Kallat is associated with collage, sculpture, installations and multimedia works. He served as the artistic director of the second edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an international exhibition of contemporary art, held in Kochi in 2014. He mostly chooses multi-sensory environment of Mumbai as the theme of his works on different canvases.
Jitish Kallat was born on 14th July, 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He completed his graduation in painting from the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai in 1996. He got married to another contemporary artist, Reena Saini Kallat. They work together and conduct exhibitions too. His first solo exhibition was held at Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai and it was titled ‘PTO’. He uses large-format paintings and drawings, and still follows the same style. Mumbai remained his central theme for most of his works, which he describes as his ‘Universe’. Some museum collections have also inspired him in his works.
He was shortlisted for The Skoda Prize in 2012 for the project, "Field Notes” exhibited at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai. Painting, large-scale sculpture installations, photography, and video art are his favourite genres of art. His works are richly layered and replete with metaphor. He uses images from newspapers and magazines, advertising billboards, wallpaper and graffiti to create his individual work. Stations of a Pause, Chemould gallery, Mumbai in 2011, The Astronomy of Subway, Haunch of Venison, London in 2008, Universal Recipient, Haunch of Venison, Zurich and Aquasaurus, Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation in 2007 are some of his solo exhibitions in the recent past.
