Jatindranath Sengupta Biography

Jatindranath Sengupta was a renowned poet and writer belonging to West Bengal. He was regarded as a pessimist poet and creative writer. In 1923 he published his first book "Marichika", an anthology of poems. After that he has published several poetry works as well as a few translations towards the later years of his life. Kumarasamvaba of Kalidasa, Gandhi Bani Kanika, Rathi O Sarathi and Shakespeare O Anyanya Anubad (translations of Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello and Anthony and Cleopatra) are his noted translations.

 

He was born at Shantipur of Nadia in the year 1887 in a middle class family. Dwarkanath Sengupta and Mohitkumari Devi were his parents. His father was a headmaster of a local school. His early education was done at a local school of his village. Later he reached Kolkata, stayed with his uncle and passed the Entrance examination in 1903. Later he graduated in civil engineering from the Bengal Engineering College at Shibpore and served as District Engineer of Nadia for a short period. He got married in the year 1908. He was affected by illness and thus he was jobless for about 3 years. He didn’t own a string financial background. So he did odd jobs like spinning chakra and match box production. However the job of the Estate Engineer in the Cossimbazar Raj Estate in 1923 and remained in that post till his retirement.

 

He started his literal career in the 20s. He started writing poems and very soon became a popular poet. He wrote almost in the same period of Tagore. Society and contemporary life were the main themes of his works. He was deeply influenced by Gandhian Principles.
