Janeshwar Mishra Biography

Janeshwar Mishra was an Indian politician from Samajwadi Party who was hailed as Chhote Lohi for his commitment towards socialist ideology. He hailed from Uttar Pradesh. He has been active in both state level and national level politics. A parliamentarian who represented Rajya Sabha thrice, he has also served as Minister for Water Resources during June 1996 – May 1997, and many other portfolios at different points of time. He served as union minister of state from 1977, and also Railways Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government in 1990–91. He has served as minister of Petroleum, Water Resources Chemicals and Fertilisers, Energy, Shipping and Transport, and Communication and Railways under different political leaders in the central government.  

Janeshwar Mishra was born in Subh Natahi village in Ballia on 5 August 1933. His birth place now belongs to UP. His father’s name is Ranjeet Mishra. He completed his BA studies and law studies, and was associated with student’s politics. He joined the Samajwadi Yuvajan Sabha as a student, and met Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain during those days. He was married to Gangotri Devi and had two daughters.

He got elected to Lok Sabha from Allahabad thrice, and he also got opportunity to join the cabinet multiple times. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1969 when he defeated K D Malviya, then Petroleum Minister of Indira Gandhi’s cabinet. In 1977 elections, he defeated V. P. Singh. He also got elected to Lok Sabha in 1989 general elections. He got elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996, 2000 and 2006. He died due to cardiac arrest on 22 January 2010 at Allahabad, and he was fully active in his political career at the time of his death.
