Jalagam Venkat Rao Biography

Jalagam Venkat Rao is an Indian politician of Telangana Rashtra Samithi party and a two-term MLA from present-day Telangana, which was previously a part of state of Andhra Pradesh. He currently represents Kothagudem Assembly constituency of Telangana, and in 2004 state assembly elections he won Sathupalli constituency from undivided Andhra Pradesh. He is the second son of late Jalagam Vengala Rao, a Congress politician from undivided Andhra Pradesh who served as the 5th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh during 10 December 1973 – 6 March 1978. His elder brother Jalagam Prasad Rao is a former minister while Jalagam Venkat Rao currently holds the position of Parliamentary Secretary, and has served as MLA twice representing INC.

Jalagam Venkat Rao was born on 28 July 1968 into a family with very strong political backup. He along with his elder brother Jalagam Prasad Rao followed his father’s footsteps, and joined politics at a very young age. He was a technocrat and was running a software company in Hyderabad, VJ Info, before he turned active in state politics. Rao holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer science from University of Maryland, USA. He completed the course long back in the year 1990, and worked in the profession for a while.

Jalagam Venkat Rao followed the legacy of his father and won the 2004 elections from Sathupalli constituency. He contested from the Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) party. He got elected for the second time from Kothagudem assembly constituency in 2014 general elections of Telangana soon after the formation of the state, the first and the only Telangana Rashtra Samithi legislator from the district. Agriculture, Power Generation and Horticulture are his other interests. He is married to J. Vani and they have a son.
