Jaipal Reddy Biography

Jaipal Reddy is a prominent politician and parliamentarian from Telangana, currently representing Indian National Congress. He was an MP representing Chevella constituency of Telangana in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In Gujaral’s cabinet, he served as Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. He served as Union Minister for Urban Development (2009) and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet (2010-2012) and was later given the portfolios, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences during 2012-2014. He served as general secretary of the Janata Party from 1985 to 1988.

Sudini Jaipal Reddy was born on 16 January 1942 in Madgul of Hyderabad State. He has been an agriculturist before his active entry to politics. He completed his graduation from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He got elected to the state assembly for the first time in 1969 as a Congress candidate, and served as an MLA of Kalwakurthy constituency for four terms till 1984. He was against Emergency period announced by Indira Gandhi, and he quit Congress to join Janata Party in 1977. In 1980 he unsuccessfully contested against Indira Gandhi in Lok Sabha Elections as a Janata Party candidate.  He lost by a huge margin to Gandhi. After that he got elected to Lok Sabha five times, both as Janata Party candidate and Congress. He returned to Congress in 1999.

He reached Parliament for the first time in 1984 from representing Mahbubnagar constituency and became a prominent member of the Janata Dal in the United Front coalition at the Centre five years later. He was elected to parliament in 1984, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. He was conferred Best Parliamentarian Award in 1998. In political circles, S Jaipal Reddy is known as one who is always prepared to answer a question.
