Jahar Dasgupta Biography

Jahar Dasgupta is a contemporary painter from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.  He is a recipient of Paricharan Sarkar Memorial Award and many other honours. He has successfully conducted many solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad. His first solo exhibition organised in Birla Academy, and exhibited his first solo in abroad in 2004 at Gallery Hansmania, Norway. He is associated with the field of art since late 1960s and has more than 6 decades of experience in this field.

 

Jahar Dasgupta was born on 31 May 1942 in Jamshedpur, British India. His father Mr. Narendranath Dasgupta worked in TISCO in an executive post. During his childhood days he was interested in drawing animals like dogs and elephants on floor. He also drew the pictures of trees then. By the age of 9 he started drawing portraits, and draw Stalin face and Ma Sarada Devi. When his father left his executive post, the family moved to Dhanbad. Later his father joined as a scientist at Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research institute.

 

While he started drawing pictures of famous persons at a very young age, his talent was noticed by his parents, and they sent him to Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan to study art. He was enrolled at Kala Bhavana, where he got opportunity to learn art from some of renowned artists like Nand Lal Bose, Ramkinkar Baiz and Benode Behari Mukherjee, which proved to be a turning point of his career. He completed the diploma course in 1964.

 

Then he started his career as an art teacher, and also pursued a career in painting. He started conducting exhibitions and earned acclaim for his work. During his struggling years, he also gave tuitions to numerous students for his livelihood.
