J. Geeta Reddy Biography

J. Geeta Reddy is an Indian politician from Telangana. A member of Indian National Congress (INC) party, she currently serves as a member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly. She represents Zahirabad constituency in Medak district. A 5-term MLA, she also became state minister multiple times. In her last term in the undivided Andhra Pradesh she served as Minister for Major Industries, Sugar, Commerce and Export Promotion during 2009 – 2014. She is also a physician and gynaecologist by profession. She earlier served as President of the Republican Party of India.

Dr. Jetti Geeta Reddy was born in 1947 in Hyderabad State. She is married to Dr. Ramachandra Reddy and has one daughter. She studied MBBS at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad and for advanced studies she moved to London. She became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London in 1989. After studies she worked in Australia, followed by London and Saudi Arabia during the period 1971 – 1982 and then returned back to India. Her husband also worked in Saudi Arabia, and they returned to India as requested by Rajiv Gandhi and then started medical practice here.

She got into politics in the late 1980s. She successfully contested state assembly elections for the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1989 from Gajwel, and later won from the same constituency in 1999 and 2004. In 2009 and 2014 she got elected as MLA from Zahirabad constituency. A 5-term MLA, she also became state minister multiple times.

During her first tenure in 1989-1994, she became the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Social Welfare, Sports, Secondary Education and Protocol. She served as Minister for Tourism, Sugar and Major Industries commerce and Export promotion during 2004-2009, held portfolios of Information and Public relations, Tourism, Culture, FDC, Archaeology, Museums & Archives, Cinematography during 2009–2010 and Major Industries, Sugar, Commerce and Export promotion during 2010-2014.
