Hetukar Jha Biography

Hetukar Jha was an Indian writer, professor and scholar. He was also a researcher. Jha has authored a few books, mostly belonging to non-fiction genre. Man in Indian Tradition: Vidyapati’s Discourse on Purush, Perspectives on Indian Society and History: A Critique, Amaranatha Jha, Tirhut in Early Twentieth Century: Mithila Darpan of Ras Bihari Lal Das, Ganganatha Jha, Social Structures of Indian villages: A Study of Rural Bihar, Autobiographical Notes Of Mahamahopadhyaya etc are among them. He also published many articles based on his research works on Fulbright Program. He passed away on 19 August 2017 in Patna, Bihar at the age 73, and was cremated at his native village Sarisav Pahi in Madhubani district.

Hetukar Jha was born on 5 March 1944 in Sarisav Pahi in Madhubani district, Bihar. He was born to Babu Chemkar Jha and Mohini Devi. He spent his early days in his rural village, where he completed his schooling. He got married to Indira Singh Jha at the age of 16, and the couple had three sons. His higher education was completed in Patna city, where he took graduation and post-graduation. He later completed his PhD in Sociology at Patna University in 1980.

After completing his master’s degree in 1967, he started his professional career at Patna University as a lecturer the following year. He retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology in 2004, thus spending more than 35 years in teaching profession. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1972 by the US Educational Foundation in India. As a researcher, "Tradition, Violence and Modernisation: Understanding the Legitimation Crisis of Indian Political Order", "Lower-Caste Peasants and Upper-Caste Zamindars in Bihar” etc are among his published articles.
