Hemen Majumdar Biography

Hemen Majumdar was an Indian painter who lived in British India in Bengal. His birthplace Kishoreganj now belongs to Bangladesh. Lady with Lamp, depicting loneliness of a woman is his celebrated work as an artist. He has portrayed numerous women on his canvas, which include some nude and semi-nude portrays as well. In 1911 he decorated the gates to welcome King George V, on his visit to India. He was one of the founding members of Indian Academy of Fine Art, Kolkata in 1919 along with Jogeshchandra Seal, Jamini Roy, Bhabani Charan Law and Atul Bose. He remained a celebrated artist during his lifetime and has been invited by many rulers to draw their portraits and also gave him the position of court artist.

 

Hemen Majumdar was born on19 September 1894 in Kishoreganj, British India. His birthplace now belongs to present-day Bangladesh. His college education was done at Government College of Art & Craft and Jubilee Art School, Kolkata. He along with A.C. Mukhopadhyay published the journal, Shilpi. In 1931 he was invited by Maharaja of Kashmir to Kashmir to live and continue his work as an artist. In fact he served as a court artist of Maharaja of Patiala as well, in between 1932 and 1938. He was one of the founding members of Indian Academy of Fine Art in Kolkata, and many of his works are exhibited there.

 

In Bombay Art Exhibition held at Mumbai in 1921, he earned first prize. Lady with Lamp - Loneliness of woman, Cure of all Ills - Painted Mahatma Gandhi spinning thread and Kaner - Dul – Earring are some of his major works. He was suffering from health issues and illness when he painted Gandhiji’s portrait. In 2002 one of his paintings was stolen, but later found.
