Harindra Dave Biography

Harindra Dave was a 20^th century writer and journalist from Kutch, Gujarat. He wrote in Gujarati language, and is best known as a playwright, poet and novelist. He lived during the period, 19 September 1930 – 29 March 1995. He authored more than fifty works, including poems, essays, drama and fiction. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for his poetry collection titled Hayati. Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1982, the Kabir Award from the Madhya Pradesh Government, the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad award and the prestigious Goenka award for Journalism are the major honours received by him.

Harindra J Dave was born on 19 September 1930 in Khambhra village in Kachchh District, present-day Gujarat, then British India. His higher education was done at Shamaldas Gandhi College, Bhavnagar and University of Bombay. He was a journalist by profession, who worked with different publications such as Janashakti, Chitrapat, Janmabhoomi, Samarpan etc. As a journalist, he started his career in 1951 with Janashakti as an editor. Apart from writing columns, he also served as an editor for a few. During Emergency Period, his powerful writings got noticed.

During his lifetime he authored around 50 books, belonging to different genres of literature. Aganpankhi (1962) was his first published book, followed by Madhav Kyayn Nathi, Krishna ane Manav Sambandho, Mukhvato, Anagat, Hayati, Sang-Asang, Lohi no Rang Lal, Gandhi Ni Kavad etc. He was very much active in writings in the 1970s and 1980s. Manav Sambandho (1982) was a research work on Krishna. He married Jayalakshmi in 1932 and had three sons. She died in 1987, a few years before the death of Harindra Dave in 1995.
