Hari Dev Joshi Biography

Hari Dev Joshi was a prominent political figure from Rajasthan. He served as the chief minister of Rajasthan thrice during 11th, 16th & 18th state assembly. He was in office during 11 October 1973 – 29 April 1977, 10 March 1985 – 20 January 1988 and 4 December 1989 – 4 March 1990. His third and final term as CM was brief and short and it lasted exactly three months. He has served as a governor of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal at different points of time. Joshi was a politician associated with Indian National Congress. He passed away in 1995. Many institutions of Rajasthan have been named after him.

 

Hari Dev Joshi was born on 17 December 1921 in a small village called Khandu near Banswara. As a politician he rose to prominence after Indian independence. He remained a close associative of Nehru family with leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The phase after Emergency period affected his rule in Rajasthan as well, and he lost his power for the first time in 1977 following Emergency period.

 

Though he became chief minister three times, he couldn’t complete his term at least once. He became a legislator for 10 consecutive terms and never lost. Yet he couldn’t achieve this feat. As a chief minister the first thing he did was to construct several bridges across Mahi river at different places to connect two extreme places. He also started three universities namely Kota, Ajmer and Bikanar. Haridev Joshi University of Journalism and Mass Communication in Jaipur and the Haridev Joshi Government Girl’s College, Banswara are named after him. He felt that he would become CM for the fourth time too, but it never happened.
